Objective

The vision of Map Kibera is to create a corps of citizens in Kibera who are versed in a variety of technologies and empowered to report on, tell stories about, and generate data and map information about themselves and their community, train others in these skills, and to use that information for action. Supported by a combination of open source/open data technologies (OpenStreetMap, Ushahidi, SMS, etc), Map Kibera will strengthen use of these tools both in Kibera, and more widely in Kenya and beyond, through their role as advocates for, and trainers in, community information development.

The working principles of Map Kibera are based on values of open source and open data. Starting from Kibera itself, Map Kibera seeks to work in collaboration with entire communities and stakeholders, on the scale from individual, to community based organizations, to large internationals, on an equitable, open and transparent basis.

Issues

Map Kibera sees technology as a means to bring light, and enable action, on issues most affecting Kibera. These include issues in Education, Water and Sanitation, Security, Health, Economic Opportunities, Governance and Transparency, Political Participation, and Open Access.
