On Tuesday, May 25, the participants met to informally discuss their work in the area of water and sanitation, and specifically focus on geographic and other research and programs in watsan in Kibera.

- Rivers are used for water. toilet. recreation. agriculture. cleaning.
- Trying to deal with a lot conflict, with communities along rivers.
- Needs better emphasis on humans amidst the environment
- "Beautification" involves a 30m buffer along riparian zone. Work has focus on riverside residence sites, but not on dump sites.
- In principle, good program. In practice, has been lacking.
Issues
- Regarding regulation. Need is there, but more important issue is acceptability. That means Advocacy.
- Nairobi generally, even formal areas, has bad sewage infrastructure, intended for population of 200,000.
- Cholera is impacting people now! even with CDC and biocentres, etc.
- Need facts for Advocacy. Kenya is highly rated on policy BUT implementation falls behind. Advocacy is missing, because they already know.
- Economic trade offs. If water vendors repair pipes properly, replace with iron, then prices would go up to over costs. If govt subsidizes the installation, how to make sure fair and equitable.
Upcoming Activities
KOEE
Four year plan, building community biocenters pioneered by Umande, within informal school grounds (Mashimoni, Raila, St. Christine's, +1 other (suggestions welcome)). These become community centers for sustainability. They are funding by Christmas Calendar sales in Denmark.
There is a curriculum in development, in cooperation with Danish schools. Green Teachers will lead a program to develop "local environmental development plans", focusing on water, sanitation, solid waste and flooding.
KOE are doing a baseline survey. They need to define boundaries for "school districts" around each school, then survey in meetings and transect walks. They will share this questionairre, and the resulting data. Also plan to take water samples for analysis, focusing on protection from post-treatment contamination. They are interested to see what overlap there will be with Map Kibera survey. Map Kibera's boundary data, subvillage boundaries, and possible open sharing of things like clinic boundaries are of interest.
Following Survey, there will be Installation, then a process of Monitoring, and Community Formation.
For the baseline survey, and subsequent surveys, there is interest in engaging Map Kibera
Amnesty International
Interest in economics, social, and cultural rights, in coalitions. interest in more subjective experience of issues.
Launching the "Kenyan Report on Security", with a focus on women/girls in the slums. The theme is "Demand Dignity". Due in June 2010. This is the result of work in Kibera and several other Nairobi slums, in February.
They have previously published "Situation of Slums in Nairobi" in February 2009.

Have previously worked on studies on Chlorine levels in water, but data is not accessible. Levels sometimes exceed safety standards.
Umande may be doing work installing water chambers, with master meters to monitor consumption.

Questions from the group.
- Questions are Who will use PP? Who will bring back? Who will use fertilizer?
- Issues of acceptance, legitimacy, of a new type of sanitation? Compare to current reality. Bad security at night, and health problems through lack of adequate and safe facilities.
- Standard of cleanliness of the fertilizer, and lack of standards generally handling human waste? Swedish study finds PP fertilizer free of pathogens.
- In urban agriculture? Guidance is needed from the Ministry of Agriculture on standards.

MS Kenya did survey last year, made recommendations to govt.
- On the control of water resources, regulate what is existing already (informal network of water suppliers).
