Following up on the process.

It strikes me that it might be better to find leaders in the community who would like to have such a map and already know how to use it. But that might not be possible or?

If not then we have to meet with those who have participated in these meetings (the lead people) and individually help them to make use of information. I wonder if there is someone with expertise in this who we could partner with? For instance, Oxfam or Amnesty? I think that we have specialized skills, and those do not include helping train in advocacy tec hniques.

Let us think a bit about our role:

• Intermediary: we can link local players to the more powerful organizations.
• Trainer on tools
• What about – we may need an advocate partner to make use of all this. I don’t really think our ultimate role is to assist that way, but it’s missing currently.

I think those we’ve met with in the community are only partly inspired to act on the new tools. They don’t completely understand.

What we’re doing is actually quite unusual. We’re meeting on issue areas, but not in order to support that issue. We have no expertise in education. But we’re tool-providers and supporting general information access. Therefore, it’s a bit more subtle. I think we have to clearly express our role and think about HOW when you provide a tool that wasn’t asked for people are going to make use of it within their current workflow. We can’t ask them to change their workflow too much or it won’t work.

Therefore, maybe finding a few people in the community who actually request for what we offer is key. Then think beforehand with them about how they’ll use the map data and other info.

Agreed. I've been stressing "tool provision not research" in the community meetings but agree that it has be highly strategically targeted. In terms of driving use of these tools on a theme-by-theme basis, what if we each take a theme and sketch out what needs to happen to increase the chance that these tools will live on.

• get Binti a map of all their safe spaces layered on top of our security map so they can see which dangerous areas don't have safe spaces (will load tracing paper safe spaces map onto OSM this weekend hopefully);
• talk with Binti about how the map can serve as a discussion tool for Binti graduates, these are the ones that start and lead their own safe spaces/clubs;
• build out the best */girlssecurity site possible (highlighting security concerns) so it can be an advocacy tool;
• work with Karen to get the mappers hired to map girls financial opportunities, which is another way to look at combatting vulnerability

Organizational Profiles

The need driving this in Kibera is widely similar ... open and efficient civil society in a chaotic place. There are hundreds of NGOs and CBOs operating in Kibera, substitution for almost all of the services you'd expect from government, which operate only very partially with their cohorts ... duplication, corruption, and lack of coordination are huge drains on a place that receives an inordinate amount of funding with little to show for it. Many of those organizations collect information in Kibera but do not share it. Kibera has become a research laboratory of sorts, with hundreds of published academic papers, many of them undertaken with the cooperation of individuals and organizations in Kibera. Absurdly and tragically, these papers are rarely made available again back in Kibera. I am more well read on Kibera than even highly educated people who have lived there their entire lives!

The emerging idea is to set up a Crabgrass instance, seed it with organization profiles (we have sources from the Population Council, OpenStreetMap, and local partners) and make those group pages. We'd make this a subsection of Voice of Kibera (http://voiceofkibera.org/). During our "Maps for Data" program (think "Beer for Data" but in a place where alcohol wouldn't be appropriate ... we'll be printing large maps of Map Kibera and distributing them, and at the same time ask for data to be shared), we'll raise awareness of the new site, collect details, and reports, etc. Some data may not be fully publicly releasable, so we at least want to build up an index of who has what.

Some of the questions we're facing are how to facilitate an organization claiming their Group page, whether we want to have individual profiles, and if there are ways to access the site without internet access. Maps will be a part of this, but we're unclear exactly how yet ... perhaps it's simply a tool to place organizations on the OSM map (Crabgrass has some pretty basic geo integration at the moment).

Building off Population Council report, and Map Kibera collected data. Also SODNET's database of CBO's. Seperate system, or integrated with maps for data (more information could be collected then), or part of some kind of composite wiki?
