The time has come.
Map Kibera would like to invite you to map Karura Forest next Saturday, May 22.
The party will start at 9:30 am at Kenya Forestry Service Headquarters with a brief presentation of the project and mapping techniques (usage of GPS units, OpenStreetMap etc.). There is a big parking space here where you’ll be able to leave your cars!
Directions: From the Center From Westgate
After this brief introduction we’ll divide ourselves into 7 groups each of which will map different paths and points in the forest. We’ll have plenty of GPS units, but you are welcome to bring yours as well.
Bring sturdy shoes and maybe a change of clothes, as the forest can get muddy, wet and slippery – just like any other forest.
We will finish mapping by 14:00 after which we will drive towards Shell House on the opposite site of the forest where refreshments will be served and where you will learn how to edit the map. You may want to bring a laptop to take part in editing, and a modem would be helpful in case wifi doesn’t come together. After editing comes the second best part of the mapping party – an after party.
Regarding security, we are working closely with Capt Danny Alexander of the British Army and the Kenyan Forest Service to provide you with the safest and most enjoyable time possible.
This is a social event and an opportunity to learn new things and meet new people. There will be time to hang out, discuss open data and map projects, and just relax with friends and family. We’ll have a great time!
