Company interested in working with Map Kibera group.

This is a company working in phone sharing technology. They would like to pilot in the Kibera community and so they gave Map Kibera the mandate of mobilizing people. They need

  • 3 men between 15yrs-30yrs
  • 3 men between 30yrs-60yrs
  • 3 women between 15yrs-30yrs
  • 3 women between 30yrs-60yrs.

They will produce handsets and airtime. This is purely business and not voluntarism. There will be a long term engagement of which mapping will come sometimes in March.

Members requested to come up with the names of the nominees but there were assigned each and everybody to come with one member even some accepted to come with two members. And so they agreed to come up with names in the next meeting.

Mikel told the members the company will have meeting but he was not sure of the dates, so he asked whether there was anybody who was interested to represent the group. Kennedy Ogolla and Maurine Omino accepted to represent the group.

Brainstorming Strength, Weakness, and Opportunities of the Group

STRENGTH

  • Many can penetrate to our group because of the map.
  • Having respect among each other.
  • Mapping skills.
  • Familiar to/with our areas.
  • Maintaining unity in the group without the coordinators.
  • Communicating to other organisation and our community about the group and what they do.
  • Knowing what it takes to volunteer and skills to work with in the community.

WEAKNESS

  • Timekeeping.
  • Ignorance.
  • Misunderstanding.
  • Fear of responsibilities and expression.
  • Lack of trust.
  • Less skill in mapping concerning computer.

OPPORTUNITIES

  • Working with other community groups and NGOs
  • Mobilizing young people and educating them over peace and violence.
  • Teaching people on how to use GPS.
  • Interacting and welcoming foreigners in Kibera.
  • Interacting with people from other countries because we were the first people to produce a map here.
  • We have been known with many because of mapping activities.

Adjournment

Meeting was adjourned at 4:30pm and agreed that next meeting to be on 11th Feb. 2010 at 2:00pm in KCODA premises.
