Our projects in Kibera have been growing fast, and we have great opportunities opening up for adventurous and enthusiastic people. Map Kibera is, at the core, about empowering communities to use technology for their own agenda, all players openly sharing and creating information for transparency and equitable discussion, and confronting the reality of technology on the ground, in marginalized communities. We’re now moving into a critical phase, helping our Mappers, Video Journalists, and Voice of Kibera editorial board, to fully take on ownership of their projects.

If this sounds exciting for you, whether your background is in development, media, or technology, get in touch and let us know if you think you are the right person for one of these positions, and we can discuss the specifics.

Our group of strong, technically competent and socially engaged mappers are institutionalizing and expanding. Guidance and support through the process is essential. In this role, you will

We’re also helping traditional local media get online and get new audiences, helping them tell a new story of Kibera. In this role, you will…

OSM Hacker

You are a fanatic about OpenStreetMap and/or open source GIS, and want to apply your skills in new places. Map Kibera has been collecting a lot of data, and design ideas for mapping applications, and we need an enthusiastic and adventurous individual to push along the technical side. You should have deep experience with contributing to and using OpenStreetMap data; programming skills are a plus, but not essential.

You work would cover…

  • […] They think it’s exciting to see their work online, but are also interested in making sure the rest of Kibera also gets to see it. On July 17th, they’ll have a local debut – showing a few clips at the start of a documentary someone else is bringing to Kibera. In the midst of all this, we’ve managed to recruit some great volunteers in both tech and journalism (though we’re still looking for a longer-term intern!). […]
